L3Harris Technologies announced on Monday that the National Administration of Space and Aeronautics (NASA) chose the company to develop a next-generation concept geostationary weather imagers. The concept aims to help advance monitoring, forecasting and other Earth observations in the future.

“L3Harris will use its five decades of engineering and manufacturing experience in building space imagery systems to develop the concept of the next generation weather satellite. The new imager will support NOAA’s efforts to continually improve observations of the Earth from geostationary orbit, a critical capability that protects the lives and property of the citizens of our country, ”commented Edouard Zoiss, president of Space and Airborne Systems at L3Harris.

L3Harris will develop an imager design and perform technology development for the United States National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Geostationary Satellite System and Extended Orbits (GEO-XO). The GEO-XO mission is designed to replace the currently operational Environmental Satellite-R (GOES-R) meteorological satellites.

The next-generation GEO-XO imager will incorporate additional spectral bands, improved data compression algorithms, and higher spatial resolution. These enhanced capabilities, combined with the imager’s efficient scanning capabilities, will provide excellent severe storm tracking, weather forecasting, and other important benefits for both public and private users.

L3Harris has extensive experience in the development of similar weather sensors. The company’s products are used on AA’s Advanced Baseline Imager for the GOES-R series of satellites, the Cross Track Infrared Sounder for the Joint Polar Satellite System and more. NOAA’s GEO-XO program is expected to launch in the early 2030s with support from NASA.
